Outdoor Bowls is played on a grass surface called a Bowling Green which is split up into playing areas called rinks. Players take turns to roll their bowls from a mat at one end of the rink towards a small ball called a jack at the other end of the rink.. Bowls are designed with a bias so that they take a curved path towards the jack rather than a straight line which adds an unexpected element to the game. A good result is when the bowl takes a correct line with controlled weigh to get close to the jack. One shot is awarded for each bowl that is closer to the jack than your opponents.
There are different formats to the game. Usually games are played as singles, pairs , triples or fours. In singles the winner is first to be awarded 21 shots. In pairs, triples or fours the highest scoring team after a set number of ends is declared the winner.
Why not come and have a go to see if the game is for you. It’s a fun game to learn and to play and we have several club team games that new Bowlers can get involved in.
